Last year’s heatwave in the UK was unprecedented, and 2022 was the hottest year on record for the country, but these weren’t exceptions. The Met Office calculations hint that we might witness such temperatures every 3-4 years, an alarming frequency considering that without greenhouse gases and global warming, the frequency would have been once every five centuries. Research from the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) tells us that the world will witness unprecedented temperatures, and a rise of more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels is likely by 2027. Guardian reported experts warning about the role that global warming has played in the occurrence of extreme weather conditions like “more severe heatwaves, droughts and wildfires but also more intense rainfall events and flooding.” 

In the near future, we will be seeing very real effects of climate change play out in front of our eyes, in media, and in our safe spaces. And children will not be untouched by these impacts. If anything, they will often be the most vulnerable to climate uncertainties. Compared to their grandparent’s generation, children born in the last year are 2-7 times more likely to witness adverse climatic conditions such as heatwaves, flooding, droughts, crop failures and wildfires. 

Globally, children face an uncertain future; the climate crisis is infringing on children’s rights to a safe home, healthy environment, healthcare, food and education. Climate risk is a child rights and child safety issue. 

Compared to a person born in 1960, across their lifetime, a child born in 2020 will experience, on average:

On a micro level, this means that children learn about the “normal” weather and climate conditions and then live through each day with pieces of that “normal” shedding away. On a macro level, they are growing up in a world that a pandemic has ravaged, exposing them to several vulnerabilities. It is unconscionable.

Addressing climate change and climate anxiety

The climate crisis is hitting us hard emotionally and psychologically too. When a young person first begins to understand the concept of climate change, the feeling of doom can be overpowering. And when you add the living experience to the mix, it can feel like there is little hope for the future. The Royal College of Psychiatrists reported eco-distress or eco-anxiety in young children and adolescents, with signs like helplessness, anger, loss of sleep, panic, and guilt affecting young people. 

UNICEF came up with the Children’s Climate Risk Index revealing that 1 billion children are at ‘extremely high risk’ of the impacts of climate change. There are also questions about the extent of the physical health impact of climate change, such as heat-related stress, asthma and allergies, vector-borne illness, and the health consequences of floods and droughts. The threat to well-being is real. 

It can also lead to feelings of impermanence, lack of stability, and sense of place and identity; something experts are also referring to as solastalgia, or the distress produced by environmental change impacting people while they are directly connected to their home environment. All these emotions and reactions to climate despair must be addressed when talking to young children. 

Let’s not forget a young person named Greta Gerwig brought in renewed attention to environmental concerns and led to the creation of the Fridays for Future climate movement. 

How to talk to children about climate change

Parents, teachers, caregivers, grandparents, relatives, and all adults will need to navigate this issue with children. It can be a potentially difficult conversation, so we lay down a guide to help you get started. 

We don’t have all the answers about climate change and how vast its impact will be. Events unfold in front of us in real-time, and we learn as we go. Scientists, environmentalists, policymakers, and activists are working to improve things. But the questions and uncertainties will not go away. 

Talking to children about climate change will be an open-ended conversation as we live through it. Plenty of resources are available to help you set the context for this conversation. Dr Hana Patel, General Practitioner and GP Expert Witness, share resources we can use in the process, including The Woodland Trust, UNICEF, and WWF. 

Save The Children and NASA also have many resources for adults' and children’s education on the issue. Make use of these resources and then learn together with children. 

Start with basic facts about how we use resources and the pressing demands of an ever-increasing population. Explain the cause and effect behind events, how resource overuse led to greenhouse gases emission, how the emission makes our planet hotter, and why rising temperatures are concerning. Make use of media and informational resources on the internet. Don’t add subjective statements or opinions to the mix. Let them process the facts. 

Listen to the child and observe how they are reacting to the conversation. Each child is different. Some children will feel intimidated or overwhelmed by the information; others might ease into it, whereas some children will want to take immediate action to improve things.

First, understand how much the child knows. Then, learn how they are reacting to the information. Then tailor your conversation accordingly. If the child is trying to come up with solutions, don’t dismiss them. If they feel hopeless, give them an action plan or promising direction. Let them know that you are in this together. 

But ensure the child does not think it’s their burden to solve the problem. Focusing on solutions provides hope because the child understands they can make a difference and prevent things from worsening.  

Every time you share a problem, for example, depleting energy resources, accompany that with a solution. You can recommend or brainstorm solutions together, like reducing wastage at home, switching off electric appliances, finding natural light instead of using power during the day, gardening, etc. 

If they seem too panicky or concerned, acknowledge that, reinforce that they are safe, and then tell them that taking positive actions can make a difference. 

It is important to empower children as agents of change. You can choose a very actionable day for this conversation, like Earth Hour or World Environment Day, or a marathon for a climate charity, and segue into how these initiatives will help solve the bigger problem. 

“Little things, such as planting a seed, or learning more about energy use at home, and then creating an action plan to save energy, maybe placing reminders around the house to switch off appliances when not in use,” Patel shares. 

Spend some time outdoors, in nature, with children. The act of slowing down, appreciating nature for its bounties and co-existing with other species can be profoundly impactful in balancing hope with corrective action. 

Talking to children about climate change is crucial in preparing them for the future and empowering them to make a positive impact. While the climate crisis poses significant challenges and uncertainties, it is essential to approach these conversations with accurate information and scientific facts. By improvising the dialogue to meet each child's needs, focusing on solutions, and emphasising collective action, we can instil hope and responsibility without burdening children with solving the problem on their own. Ultimately, we can inspire children to become change agents and work towards a sustainable and resilient future by taking action together as families and communities.

Sooner or later, children will need to use public transport on their own — it is up to you to ensure they are ready for the experience. Here are some safeguards we can establish to keep them safe on the road. 

Road and transit safety is not just a transport challenge. When we think of public spaces (in this case, public transport) as facilitators of mobility for children, transit safety also becomes a child rights and child safety issue, with ramifications for health, wellbeing, education, participation rights, and even economic growth. 

In many countries, safe transit to schools and back home for children is an important determinant of access to education and opportunities. If children can safely commute, they are likelier to stay in school, secure a decent education, keep up their attendance and eventually chase better opportunities. But when children and young people are travelling on their own, they are also left relatively vulnerable. And this happens irrespective of the country they are in. 

In the UK, specifically, concerns have been raised, time and again, about how independent commute “leaves them (children and young people) vulnerable to people who want to exploit them for sexual and criminal purposes.” Children are likely to use the same travel or commute routes and board and deboard at the same time each day, and as such, these patterns can also make them vulnerable. Interacting with strangers on public transport should be discouraged. Yet, even the most careful person cannot help it if they are being noticed by other regular commuters. The vulnerability amplifies for children who might already be vulnerable due to their geographic location, housing or living situation, among other factors.

Another dimension of children’s safety is the external road safety measures. UNICEF reports that road traffic injuries are among the leading causes of death for children and adolescents aged 5–19 years. With nearly 220,000 deaths reported in the 0-19 years age bracket due to road traffic accidents, we have the power to prevent 600 deaths each day. 

The best way to prevent children from falling into harmful situations is by identifying potential vulnerabilities beforehand. Knowing where children might be closer to harm is the first step to keeping them from those places of interaction. 

In this respect, the Look Closer campaign can provide a helpful framework. 

The first part is identifying when a young person is extremely vulnerable, for example, if they are travelling alone in an unfriendly area or at an unfriendly hour if they seem distressed or lost, or if it seems like they are being ordered by an unfamiliar older person. 

Tangible threats should be continually monitored: County lines (i.e. the manipulation and exploitation of children by strangers forcing them into drug dealing), for instance, are far more common than you think. Reportedly, 84% of parents are worried about county lines in their area. Public transport networks are used by vulnerable young people exposed to the risk of sexual exploitation, criminal exploitation and trafficking.

Reporting mechanism: If you suspect that a young person is in danger, reach out to one of the bodies for help. (See the last section on Reporting Suspected Exploitation)

Preparing Children to Use Public Transit Alone

Go over the basics of safe commuting with your children; they should avoid talking to strangers when travelling alone, especially not dispensing any personal details. Communicate with your child(ren) regularly so they can share if they are ever approached by a stranger. Help your child identify safety cues: sitting near families with children, using closed spaces life lifts or deserted routes only when they are accompanied by friends, and asking only proper authorities for help (like a police officer or someone running a business establishment in the vicinity) and not look lost in front of strangers. 

If your children have been accompanied by an adult previously, then start to ease them into independent commutes. Start practising with them by learning the route, and navigating alternate routes, then let them give you directions, and only let them do it on their own when they are fully confident. Rehearse the route with them as much as possible…their confidence in navigation can be game-changing for their road safety instincts. 

It is also crucial that your children learn their address and telephone number by heart in case of emergencies. They should also have you listed as an emergency contact and set it up on speed dial on their phone if they carry one. By the time you let them go on their own, they should also be adept at tracing their home address and school address on the map or through alternate routes. 

If another child is also learning to take public transit, it is a great idea to have the kids travel together. Being in a socially familiar space naturally enhances their confidence.

Criminal exploitation is not the only looming threat. When your child first begins commuting on their own, road safety is also a major factor.  The first exercise is crossing the road, traffic island, zebra crossing, or a footbridge as a pedestrian. Children should be familiarised with and follow the Green Cross Code, under which they stop, look, listen and think before crossing the road. Another important rule is to keep gadgets away when walking. This includes not just mobile phones but also talking off headphones when they are crossing the road. 

If your child or anyone you know is in danger, or you have reason to believe they are vulnerable, then get support. 

In case of emergencies:
Don’t be afraid to call the police in case of county lines. Just make sure you report it when you are in a safe surrounding yourself. You can reach the police on either 999 or online here. 

Transport Police:
If a threat arises while you are in a mode of public transport, text the British Transport Police on 61016 and share information about the travel route, appearance and behaviour of the child and the suspect, if any. 

Non-urgent reporting 
If you have concerns about a child’s safety and welfare, you can contact your local social care department or the independent charity Crimestoppers on 08000 555 111 or the NSPCC’s helpline on 0808 800 5000.

Children are best protected when they are prepared. Do not keep them from the realities of life, but empower them with information on identifying signs of danger. And let them know that help is available if they ever feel unsafe. 

Ensuring Children's Safety on Public Transport

Debt Awareness Week runs from 20th March- 26th March and it is extremely important to also discuss the current cost of living crisis and the impact this is having throughout the UK. The awareness week is promoted and run by StepChange who offer debt support.

The focus of the week is that debt can happen to anyone, and in the midst of a financial and cost-of-living crisis, we know this to be an extremely harrowing reality. Families are struggling to pay their household energy and food bills, fuel costs have increased, and council tax, mortgage, and rental rates have increased significantly. 

People are finding themselves faced with unmanageable payments and spiralling into debt and then of course the cycle continues without being provided with or accessing relief or support.

In May 2022, 7 million low-income households were going without at least one essential (such as a warm home, enough food, appropriate clothing or basic toiletries) and over 2 million families were neither eating properly nor heating their home adequately according to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

With debt and financial crisis comes great impact. All households are seeing a huge rise in costs for most things, and this is bound to impact both emotionally and physically upon a person or family’s well-being and physical health. Education professionals are continuing to see an increase in child mental health issues and are still working hard to combat the impact from the covid-19 pandemic. Services are strained and waiting lists for support continue to grow. 

According to Barnardos ‘At what cost? The impact of the cost-of-living crisis on children and young people report’, “more than 1 in 4 of all children in the UK now live in poverty, with millions facing the risk of going hungry. Living in poverty can mean a child is living in a cold home, going hungry, or without everyday essentials.” 

A new poll of parents of children aged 18 and under in Great Britain by YouGov conducted for this report found that:

“More than half of parents (54%) have been forced to cut back on food spending for their family over the past 12 months, according to a new survey for this report.”

“1 in 5 parents in Great Britain said they have struggled to provide sufficient food due to the current cost-of-living crisis.”

“Over a quarter (26%) said their child’s mental health has worsened due to the situation.”

“1 in 5 (20%) have taken on new credit cards, extra debt or a payday loan.”

Young Minds have also completed some research to understand the impact on children and young people and their well-being in August 2022. They found that:

“The cost of living was the major worry for over half (56%) of young people (rising from 50% in May 2022). They reported disruption to daily life, particularly their diet and sleep.”

“Those aged 20-25 were particularly likely to feel concerned about money, with 80% always or often worried about earning enough.”

“This isn’t confined to older children: 21% of 11-year-olds said money worries had caused them stress, anxiety, unhappiness, or anger.”

Debt and money worries can have a significant impact on a person’s well-being and physical and mental health. A person may feel overwhelming stress, struggle to sleep, feel anxious or depressed, and triggered by small tasks or worries. It is also important to consider that for those who already experience mental ill health, debt and financial worries could be a build-up where the person may not be working to gain an income, or maybe they’re avoiding bills so debts are rapidly increasing, or they may not feel able to cope with the additional pressures of the cost of living. Those who are parents and carers could feel additional stress given the additional responsibility of their dependents. 

Gambling can also bring about further debt or financial worries. We have seen an increase in young people also taking part in gambling activities. The Gambling Commission estimated that “around 1.7% of young people aged 11-16 could already be classed as ‘problem gamblers’ – that could be as many as 55,000 young people across England, Scotland and Wales, and a further 2.7% could be at risk of developing gambling problems if we don’t make some changes.”

Working with children and young people affected by the crisis:

Listen to their worries and give them a voice.

Allow them to keep the communication going. It is much more beneficial to allow conversations to alleviate worries and concerns as they come up rather than to allow them to develop.

Some children will be feeling embarrassed or maybe being bullied due to not having food or clothing items. It is imperative that schools and parents/carers address this wherever possible and ensure this does not continue.

Some children and young people may be at further risk of abuse, exploitation, and neglect so it is vital that safeguarding continues to be of the utmost priority.

Educate children and young people to be aware of the impact of social media and comparing themselves to others and their lifestyles.

In light of Safer Internet Day this week it is important to bring further awareness to some of the online risks that exist.

Technology is a part of our everyday lives and especially for children and young people who are constantly exploring new ideas and socialising with their peers. Children have access to the internet from a very young age however this brings both opportunities and also challenges. We also live in an era of cyber insecurity and attacks are common, be it malware, viruses or hacking. People wouldn’t leave their wallets or personal belongings lying around in a public space, but have almost definitely clicked on a link that didn’t seem totally safe or downloaded something from an unknown source.

Within the world of education, we have a duty of care to ensure that student safety is at the heart of our policies and practices especially regarding staying safe online. It is essential that we teach children and young people to develop the skills they need to keep themselves safe, and secure, and to also behave appropriately when using technology in any setting. Online safety will always be an ongoing effort that requires education, awareness, communication, and understanding of technology.

We know that most young people and adults are aware of how to protect themselves online, however, it's important for us all to come together to protect ourselves and others from things like online abuse, radicalisation and fraud as well.

It is important for parents to understand how to educate their children about online safety and also how to monitor their activities where applicable. 

There are many risks that can present from online use such as:

What we post online can define what people see and think about us and our opinions and views can be shared at the touch of a button. Most people will treat their social media accounts as purely social outlets with updating statuses and sharing pictures. Nobody usually stops to think, especially as a child or young person that their actions could end up limiting their educational or professional prospects in the future. It is always important to think before you post and to carefully read things before you hit the share button.

Whenever we use the internet, we leave behind a trail of information known as our digital footprint. This can grow in a variety of ways such as what we post on our social media channels, leaving reviews or comments, shopping online and subscribing to websites or newsletters. Websites will track our information by installing cookies and information can then be shared with third parties.

Cyber ‘phishing’ has become one of the most successful methods that criminals will use to hack an individual or organisation’s personal information. Emails with links to fake websites try to trick people into disclosing usernames and passwords or other relevant information.

Online gaming is extremely popular for children and young people but also for a lot of adults. Annual reports from Ofcom tell us that online gaming is one of the top activities enjoyed by 5-16-year-olds. Gaming does have some great benefits however it can also impact negatively on a person’s well-being. People can be exposed to online risks such as in-game bullying, online grooming, radicalisation, and gaming addiction.

Online gambling has seen a huge increase in popularity for children and young people as well as adults. Gambling not only carries the risk of addiction but also has other associated risks such as pay-outs not being fair or open and the exploitation of people’s vulnerabilities particularly within a current financial crisis.

Online abuse can be any type of abuse that happens online on any device connected to the internet. The thing about online abuse is it can happen anywhere at any time. It can occur on:

Cyberbullying or online bullying can have a significant impact on the well-being of a child or young person.

Emotional abuse is any type of abuse that involves the continual emotional mistreatment of a person and this can happen both on and offline.

Sexual Abuse - A child or young person experiencing abuse online might spend a lot more or a lot less time than usual online, texting, gaming or using social media, seem distant, upset or angry after using the internet or texting, be secretive about who they're talking to and what they're doing online or on their mobile phone and have lots of new phone numbers, texts or email addresses on their mobile phone, laptop or tablet.

Grooming is when someone builds a relationship with a person so they can sexually abuse, exploit, or traffic them. Children, young people and adults at risk can be groomed online or face-to-face by a stranger or by someone they know. If you're worried a child is being groomed online you should report it online to CEOP and contact the Police.

Online Sexual Violence or Sexual Harassment is defined as unwanted sexual conduct on any digital platform. It includes a wide range of behaviours that use technology to share digital content such as images, videos, posts, messages, pages etc. on a variety of different platforms (private or public).

Sexting is when someone shares sexual, naked or semi-naked images or videos of themselves or others or sends sexual messages. It is online abuse if a child or young person is pressured or coerced into creating or sending these types of images.

Cyberstalking is persistent unwanted contact from another person – either someone you know or a stranger. Cyberstalkers have many different motives, including those who feel wronged by their target, ex-partners, those with misplaced sexual motives, or those who just derive pleasure from scaring other, often random people. They can exploit your digital footprint by snooping on your social media channels/apps to find out your every movement, who you are in contact with and your plans. As cyberstalkers become more determined, they intrude on more aspects of your online presence, sometimes including hacking or taking over your social media accounts.

Domestic Abuse- Perpetrators can cause distress and harm to another young person or adult by use of the internet, tracking devices, social media control, text messages and this can have a significant impact on a person's mental and physical safety. 

There are significant risks associated with radicalisation in respect to being online. Extremist content can be shared online using mainstream and non-mainstream social media and through chat platforms such as discord and gaming chats. Individuals and groups can share misinformation, conspiracy theories and extremist materials and be smart enough to bypass monitoring systems if they do exist. When people are also able to post anonymously it can increase the risk and opportunity for people to access extremist materials that can lead people into being radicalised and supporting extremist causes linked to terrorism and to even be coerced into planning or committing a terrorist act. 

Ensure you password protect things and use strong/different passwords.

Keep personal information safe and limited wherever possible.

Tell someone if you are being bullied or harassed.

Speak up if you are concerned about something you see.
